If you’re in the market for a used Nissan Rogue, then you’re in luck as most of the used models will be modern as production for the model started in 2007. We’ll be taking a look at the generations, and the features you can expect from the Rogue. Here is what to check before buying a used Rogue to make sure it will suit your needs.
Key takeaways
- The Nissan Rogue discontinued some “least desirable” features after a few years, but if you’re in the market for either 3rd row seating, or hybrid options, the market is there for you.
- The Nissan Rogue’s most modern engine is small, but mighty.
- If you’re wanting something green, and safe for your family, then the 2017 is the best option as that’s where the hybrid, and top of the line safety overlap.
First Generation (2007-2012)
Hitting the rounds in 2007, this model came with three trims. There were the S, SV, and SL. They were offered in both FWD and AWD.
Things were a bit quiet at first, being nothing more than just another crossover SUV. The only real excitement for the first few years was the SL package for the SV trim. This brough leather seats, touchscreen navigation, and 18-inch alloy wheels to a more affordable price.
For model year 2011, the Rogue S Krom edition hit the roads. This had a more aggressive styling, sport tuned exhaust, 18-inch polished wheels, and a unique look to the front of the vehicle. This edition can be found on both S and SV models.
For 2012, the Krom was replaced by the “Special Edition.” This added 16-inch alloy wheels, a premium audio system, satellite radio, privacy glass, a rear view monitor, and fog lamps to the S trim.
Other changes from this year are new aluminum-alloy wheels design, sport mode to the CVT, and an around view monitor for the SL package.
Second Generation (2013-2019)
This generation saw some changes to the line, the biggest one being the optional 3rd row seating allowing for up to 7 passengers. Other new standard features were four-wheel independent suspension, electric power-assisted steering, and four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock braking system. All of these work together to make the ride smooth, and comfortable.
For the 2016 model, Nissan added NissanConnect with navigation, Siri Eyes Free, and a few more features to help enhance your driving experience. 2017 added some cosmetic changes to the line, with the biggest one being LED daytime running lights standard on all trims. When 2018 came around, Nissan dropped the 3rd row seating. They did this to optimize interior passenger room, and cargo utility space.
Things weren’t all bad for 2018, they also added some more safety features to the line. These were automatic emergency braking and blind spot warning. The SV trim moved up a notch, now coming with the larger touch screen radio.
While Nissan was working on the gasoline variant, they were also developing a hybrid variant. This debuted in 2017, and had limited availability. This came with a 2.0L IV paired with a CVT, that is connected to an electric motor and lithium-ion battery. This gives a combined 176 horsepower. It is available in SV, and SL trims.
If you manage to find one, you can look for an EPA rated 34 MPG combined. Making this the perfect model for environmentally friendly soccer moms. In 2020, the hybrid was ultimately dropped as the market wasn’t quite ready for it.
The safety of this generation was also some of the best around. The IIHS gave the 2017 model Top Safety Pick +, while most other models from this generation have the Top Safety Pick rating.
Third Generation (2020-Present)
This generation aims to set itself apart from the past. They did this by using a different platform, and going for a more squared-off design.
The new Platinum trim offers some of the best features that this line has seen. Coming with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, heated seats for the rear, and wireless phone connectivity. This model goes all in on creature comforts.
In 2022, the old, outdated engine was dropped, and despite being larger than the new one, it was less powerful. The new engine is the 1.5L 3 cylinder. This can produce 201 horsepower, while still having a great EPA rating at 33 MPG combined.
For the 2024 model, a new 12.3-inch touchscreen was added for the SL and Platinum trims. This came with Google built-in, making it even easier to use.
